Suburban Utopia, An Infertile Place (SU4IP)
Lyndon Watkinson
Lyndon Watkinson (1999) is an artist, designer, writer, and musician based in Sheffield, UK. Democratising art and art context through artworks, publications, graphic design, articles, and sound. Creative director and founder of the online arts organisation SU4IP. His work is characterised by a desire for precision, often depicting aesthetics that celebrate and criticise the absurdity of corporatized identity, calling into question the necessity of creating false exteriors when what is not seen is often just as important.
In late 2020, a blog post entitled Suburban Utopia, An Infertile Place formed part of the wider inquiry and development of his practice for his bachelor's degree in fine art. As his work matured, he applied this term as a formalisation of his creative endeavours, later abbreviating it to SU4IP, now used as a digital alias and publishing entity.

Digital Collage, 2021
Untitled is an exploration of the domestic environment, unifying characteristics of commonly found objects within the household, with emphasis on the pressure put on individuals forced to work from home and ultimately sourcing substance from nearby objects.
The reorientation of the original subject image refers closely to similar flag layouts, such as those of the Czech Republic, Chile, or Cuba. The incorporation of the green tea draws attention to the components surrounding it, blurring the lines between visual metaphors and genuine representations of subject matter.

︎ I put my green tea in the corner of the room so that I wouldn’t knock it over, and I decided this image would be the subject for my next flag. I used an Amazon package box as the canvas. I removed the physical and graphical components from the cardboard so that I could apply them to the piece once I had finished drawing on it. By doing this, I could maintain the pre-existing visual elements of my canvas. After working the image onto the blank canvas with oil pastels, I then reapplied these visual elements using glue. I digitally recreated this work by sampling the individual colours from photographs of pigments within the oil pastels.
