Suburban Utopia, An Infertile Place (SU4IP)
Lyndon Watkinson

Lyndon Watkinson (1999) is an artist, designer, writer, and musician based in Sheffield, UK. Democratising art and art context through artworks, publications, graphic design, articles, and sound. Creative director and founder of the online arts organisation SU4IP. His work is characterised by a desire for precision, often depicting aesthetics that celebrate and criticise the absurdity of corporatized identity, calling into question the necessity of creating false exteriors when what is not seen is often just as important.

In late 2020, a blog post entitled Suburban Utopia, An Infertile Place formed part of the wider inquiry and development of his practice for his bachelor's degree in fine art. As his work matured, he applied this term as a formalisation of his creative endeavours, later abbreviating it to SU4IP, now used as a digital alias and publishing entity.

About
Reversion,

Digital Collage, 2023

Recreating a domestic scene, Reversion closely observes the overlooked decadence and grandeur of residential spaces.

The components of the image closely guard the viewer from looking out into the world. What first appears as a humble appreciation for the mundane, sours into a sinister desire for the observer to stay put.

︎    Reversion is a digital collage depicting a beige circular mirror in front of an off-white window frame. In the mirror's reflection, there is an angular monolith, gazing outward.

Beyond the translucent panel lies darkness. A night sky encircles an unfathomable landscape. The combinations of glass panes wrapped in decadent layers of plastic sheets, with such a commanding focal object, form a sturdy barrier between the viewer and the outside world.

Everything here tells you to look away from what lies beyond and pay attention only to what is in your immediate vicinity. A seemingly innocuous appreciation for the mundane domestic environment is obscured by sinister undertones and a desire to keep the observer in place.
