Suburban Utopia, An Infertile Place (SU4IP)
Lyndon Watkinson

Lyndon Watkinson (1999) is an artist, designer, writer, and musician based in Sheffield, UK. Democratising art and art context through artworks, publications, graphic design, articles, and sound. Creative director and founder of the online arts organisation SU4IP. His work is characterised by a desire for precision, often depicting aesthetics that celebrate and criticise the absurdity of corporatized identity, calling into question the necessity of creating false exteriors when what is not seen is often just as important.

In late 2020, a blog post entitled Suburban Utopia, An Infertile Place formed part of the wider inquiry and development of his practice for his bachelor's degree in fine art. As his work matured, he applied this term as a formalisation of his creative endeavours, later abbreviating it to SU4IP, now used as a digital alias and publishing entity.

About
Error,

Digital Collage, 2023

A semi-plausible depiction of 'Liquid Beige Drink' is paved over by an unwavering yellow stripe. Error addresses a shift in product perception: from tangible experience to the quality of decoration.

In combination with the metaphorical yellow strip of progress, this work brings our acceptance of the good, bad, and ugly aspects of now common conventions to the forefront.

︎    Error is a digital collage depicting six plastic-wrapped drink cartons on a concrete floor. With a yellow paint stripe running across the image's background and primary subject.

The cartons in question are designated as LQB, or ‘Liquid Beige Drink’, and are packaged together to form a unit. Their packaging and design aims to promote a level of excitement surrounding a beige substance, with the suggestion of a mystery ingredient and dynamic red lettering.

This represents a shift in consumer perspectives from previously judging quality or value by physically seeing or experiencing a product to reaching conclusions based on how they are decorated. Here, this idea couldn’t be more questionable, as no suggestion is made as to what the product is like at all.

The yellow paint stripe dominating the image stops for nothing, covering any object or surface in its path. This element dictates directions and boundaries, and is seemingly infinite. Like progress, destruction and reconstruction are questions of when, rather than if.

At this time, we often find ourselves picking up our anonymous beverage for no reason other than its allure. We shed little concern over the flaking slab of yellow adhered to its exterior, knowing that the otherwise perfect-condition plastic wrapper, will shed.

Error is a representation of our silent acceptance of progress. Our hunger for gratification is unwavering, even when the taste is bitter. The good, the bad, and the ugly of the modern world is supersized.
